Study visit - Medical illustration

The House of Illustration hosted an afternoon workshop with medical illustrator Merlin Strangeway

During an interesting afternoon we drew a variety of medical specimens starting with blind contour drawings to loosen up, then pencil drawings where we used the strongest tones to depict items closest to us.

I drew a pelvis, a humerus and a kidney dish. This was surprisingly challenging as my instinct was to make distant items darker. (Excuse the fold in the paper which was the only way I could get it home)
We also used a single watercolour without preparatory line drawing to concentrate on light and dark shades. I painted a vertebrae a cannula and a pair of scissors.
I always find watercolour challenging especially on ordinary cartridge paper.

Finally we looked at some videos of beautiful flap anatomy books (here and here) I inherited my grandad's wonderful Virtues Household Physician which we were allowed to look at very carefully when we were children.

We attempted to make our own although with only an hour left that was challenging.

Whilst we drew cut and glued Merlin told us a lot about medical illustration. The postgraduate course can take up to 6 years working part time and the graduates have a very detailed knowledge of anatomy. Only graduates of the Medical Artists Education Trust course are allowed to draw live in an operating theatre.
